It takes about four hours to get to Lassen national park from the Bay Area. We left around 7pm on Friday and arrived in the middle of the night. The kids were excited, so I had to start a campfire. We watched the stars and finally turned in at 2am. It was a frosty morning, at least according to the camp host. After a late start, we had fun on a hike around the Summit Lake next to our campground. Matthew took some unplanned dip up to his chest, and I later followed up to my knees, which was not a testimony to my prudence, but rather my height advantage. Bumpass Hell with all the hydrothermal features was the highlight of the afternoon.
