Unlike the Upper Antelope Canyon, this canyon is very narrow and steep in places requiring the use of ladders. It is also longer than the Upper Antelope Canyon. It is easy to imagine that it is a difficult place to escape from in case of a flash flood. In August of 1997, 11 people drowned here after a thunderstorm dumped enough rain just a few miles upstream. By the time we descended into the canyon, the sky was mostly cloudy and the sun too low in the sky to reach most of the canyon walls and bring out all the shades of sandstone colors. It was still a remarkable place to visit.
